Seattle Officially Designates October as Women in Sports Month

In The News

Seattle has long been one of the country's leading cities for women's sports. Home to championship teams, record-setting crowds, and a passionate community of athletes, coaches, and fans, the region has built a culture where women's sports continue to thrive.

In October 2025, that commitment took another important step forward.

At the Seattle Sports Commission's annual Women in Leadership Breakfast, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell officially proclaimed October as Women in Sports Month in Seattle, recognizing the extraordinary impact women have across every level of sport from youth participation to professional competition, coaching, officiating, and leadership.

What is Women in Sports Month?

Women in Sports Month is an annual citywide celebration dedicated to recognizing the people, organizations, and partnerships that continue to shape the future of women's sports in Seattle.

Throughout October, the month serves as an opportunity to celebrate achievements, elevate stories, strengthen community partnerships, and inspire the next generation of athletes and leaders.

More importantly, it reinforces a simple idea: when more women have the opportunity to participate, coach, officiate, and lead, sports become stronger for everyone.

Why Seattle?

Seattle has earned a national reputation as one of the strongest markets for women's sports.

The region is home to professional teams including the Seattle Storm, Seattle Reign FC, and Seattle Torrent, while fans have consistently helped set attendance records across multiple leagues. Combined with a growing network of advocates, organizations, and community partners, Seattle has become a place where women's sports continue to grow on and off the field.

Women in Sports Month builds on that momentum by creating an annual moment to recognize progress while encouraging continued investment in the future of women's sports throughout the city.

Building More Than a Celebration

Women in Sports Month is about more than recognizing accomplishments; it's about creating opportunities.

The Seattle Sports Commission's Women in Sports platform brings together initiatives that support women throughout every stage of the sports ecosystem.

From youth participation through Girls LEAD, to leadership development, coaching and officiating pathways, and the annual Women in Leadership Breakfast, the platform is designed to expand access, strengthen representation and help more women thrive in sport.

As Women in Sports Month continues each October, it provides a shared opportunity for teams, schools, community organizations, businesses, and fans to celebrate the women who make sports stronger while continuing to build a more inclusive future for generations to come.
